Welcome dinner.
Your Venetian adventure will start by following the course of its canals, “campielli” (term used for the small squares of Venezia), its foundations, and bridges. You will admire some of the most famous places in the world: Piazza San Marco, Palazzo Ducale, Ponte dei Sospiri, the Ca’ d’Oro and the Rialto. Enjoy a Gondola ride scheduled for the group.
In the afternoon enjoy a spectacular ride via private motor boat to reach the island of Murano. Visit the world famous glass making factory.
Dinner.
In the morning depart from Venice aboard a private boat reserved for the group for a full day exploring the Northern Venetian Lagoon. As they travel among canals, salt marshes and islands, students will discover that Venice is part of a remarkable lagoon environment that has shaped its history and daily life for centuries.
The first stop is Sant’Erasmo, the lagoon’s large agricultural island. Fields, vegetable gardens, vineyards, canals and small settlements create a landscape very different from monumental Venice. The island is especially known for its Violet Artichoke of Sant’Erasmo. Take a short walk across the island, with the possibility of meeting a local grower to learn about farming and life in the lagoon. Then continue by boat and arrive on Mazzorbo, a small island of gardens, orchards and vineyards surrounded by water. Walk through the island and cross the footbridge connecting Mazzorbo and Burano. Explore Burano, known for its brightly colored houses, fishing traditions and lace-making. Walk along its canals and through Piazza Galuppi, traditional neighborhoods and lace shops. Free lunch and free time in Burano.
In the afternoon, continue by boat to Torcello. Nearly uninhabited today, it was once one of the lagoon’s earliest and most important settlements. Walk along the canal to the heart of the island and visit its historic sites, including the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the Church of Santa Fosca, the archaeological area and the Devil’s Bridge.
This peaceful island offers a glimpse into the origins of Venice.
Return to Venice by private boat through the lagoon. Dinner.
In the morning, travel south by private coach and stop in Chioggia, a town closely connected to the lagoon, fishing and the sea. Walk along Corso del Popolo and explore its canals, bridges, harbor, market and traditional neighborhoods. Free time for lunch.
In the afternoon, continue by private coach toward the Po Delta. Along the way, the landscape gradually changes from the Venetian Lagoon to a network of rivers, embankments, canals, fishing lagoons and wide stretches of water.
Arrive in Comacchio, check in at the hotel and take an introductory walk through the town.
Dinner.
In the morning, full-day excursion in the Po Delta Park. Travel aboard a private boat reserved for the group through one of Italy’s most distinctive natural landscapes. After exploring the Venetian Lagoon, students will encounter a different environment of river channels, reed beds, lagoons, fishing valleys, salt pans and wide open spaces. Along the way, they may observe the Delta’s rich wildlife, including the many bird species that live here.
In the afternoon, take a short, easy walk on level ground through one of the Delta’s natural areas. Depending on the route selected, there may be opportunities to see fishing valleys, salt pans and flamingos.
Return to Comacchio. Dinner
In the morning, explore Comacchio on a walk through its historic center, built around a network of canals and bridges. See the Trepponti, the town’s monumental bridges and traditional neighborhoods, and discover how fishing and life in the surrounding lagoons have shaped Comacchio.
There may also be an opportunity to learn about the fishing and preparation of eel, a tradition closely tied to the town’s identity for centuries.
In the afternoon, transfer to Ravenna by private coach. Check in at the hotel and take an introductory walk through the historic center.
Dinner.
In the morning, discover Ravenna, once the capital of the Western Roman Empire and later an important center of Byzantine Italy. Visit some of its most remarkable monuments: the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, renowned for their extraordinary early Christian and Byzantine mosaics.
In the afternoon, walk through Ravenna’s historic center. Visit Dante’s Tomb, then explore Piazza del Popolo, pedestrian streets, squares, shops and workshops devoted to the art of mosaic making.
Free time and dinner.
In the morning, travel by private coach to Classe. Visit the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, one of the most important monuments of early Christian art. Continue to the site of the ancient Port of Classe, once a major Mediterranean port. It connected Ravenna to the Adriatic Sea and to trade routes leading to Constantinople and the eastern Mediterranean. This visit brings the journey back to its central theme: water as a route connecting peoples and civilizations. In the afternoon, return to Ravenna. There may be an opportunity to take part in a short mosaic workshop, where students can learn about traditional techniques and create a small piece of their own. Free time for a final walk through the city. Farewell dinner.
