Santiago de Compostela
Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia and the final destination of the Camino de Santiago. For centuries, it has welcomed pilgrims from around the world, drawn by the tradition that the city is the burial place of Saint James the Apostle. Reaching Santiago is often an emotional and unforgettable moment, marking the end of a journey shaped by effort, reflection, and encounters with other travelers.
The heart of the city is Plaza del Obradoiro, dominated by the Cathedral’s monumental Baroque façade. The cathedral contains architectural and artistic elements from different periods, including the magnificent Romanesque Pórtico de la Gloria. Inside, pilgrims can visit the crypt traditionally believed to contain the Apostle’s remains and admire the famous Botafumeiro, the enormous incense burner used during special religious celebrations.
Around the cathedral lies a fascinating historic center filled with cobblestone streets, arcades, monasteries, university buildings, and stone palaces. This beautifully preserved area has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Santiago is also a lively university city with a youthful atmosphere, welcoming restaurants, traditional markets, and outstanding Galician cuisine.
