Roana

Roana is one of the seven municipalities on the Asiago Plateau. What characterizes this municipality is that it has six hamlets, which is why it is also known as the “municipality of the six bell towers” because each hamlet has its own church and bell tower.
In Canove, you can find the museum of the First World War, and in Cesuna, there is the museum dedicated to famous terracotta whistles.
Terracotta is formed from clay that is fired at temperatures around one thousand degrees. Its characteristic is that it is porous.
Terracotta whistles have very ancient origins, so far back in time that it is difficult to establish the date of their origin. It is presumed that, as they were found as ornaments in Egyptian tombs, they were constructed for magical and ritual purposes.
During the Roman period, they were used as toys for the sound their whistles produced. In the Middle Ages, they were used for superstitious purposes.
Over the centuries, these whistles were used as tokens of love by young people who desired their sweetheart’s hand in marriage. The initial shape of the “cuchi” (whistles) was that of a bird. Over time, this was changed to include other depictions, such as zoomorphic (animal-shaped), anthropomorphic (human-shaped), satirical, and representations of various professions.
