Ponferrada

Ponferrada is the main city in the El Bierzo region and one of the most picturesque stops along the Camino de Santiago in the province of León. Its name comes from the Latin Pons Ferrata, meaning “iron bridge,” in reference to a bridge strengthened with iron that was built to help pilgrims cross the Sil River. The settlement grew around this crossing and became an important place of protection and hospitality.

The city’s most famous landmark is the Castle of the Knights Templar, a large medieval fortress overlooking the historic center. The Knights Templar arrived in Ponferrada in the 12th century and were entrusted with protecting pilgrims traveling along the Camino. The castle was expanded over several centuries and includes imposing defensive walls, towers, courtyards, and walkways that offer beautiful views over the city and the surrounding landscape.

Below the castle, visitors can explore the historic center, including the Clock Tower, Plaza de la Encina, and the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Encina, dedicated to the patron saint of El Bierzo. Ponferrada is also an excellent starting point for discovering the vineyards, villages, and traditional cuisine of this scenic region.
