Minturnae

Located near the Garigliano River along the ancient Appian Way, Minturnae offers an engaging introduction to Roman life beyond the capital. Its position connected road and river traffic, making the town part of the wider network through which people, goods and ideas traveled across the Roman world.

Today, the archaeological site preserves the remains of a community where public life, commerce and entertainment took place side by side. Students can explore the forum, baths, market and shops, imagining the activities that once filled these spaces. The Roman theater is one of the site’s most striking features, revealing the importance of performance and shared experiences in ancient society.

The Appian Way runs through the archaeological area, making the connection between the road and the town especially clear. Minturnae brings together many themes encountered throughout the journey: engineering, trade, public spaces and everyday life. It provides a memorable link between the monumental remains of Rome and the homes and streets students will discover at Herculaneum and Pompeii.
