León

León is a city rich in history, art, and traditions. It was founded as a Roman military camp and later became the capital of an important medieval kingdom. Its strategic location along the Camino de Santiago encouraged its cultural, religious, and commercial development over the centuries. Today, traces of its Roman origins and medieval splendor can still be seen throughout the historic center.

The city’s most representative monument is the Cathedral of Santa María de León, known as the Pulchra Leonina, or “Beautiful Leonese.” It is one of the finest examples of Spanish Gothic architecture and is especially famous for its spectacular collection of stained-glass windows. The light passing through these colorful windows creates an extraordinary atmosphere inside the cathedral and has earned it the nickname “House of Light.”

León also offers many other fascinating landmarks, including the Basilica of San Isidoro, with its remarkable Romanesque frescoes; the former Convent of San Marcos; and Casa Botines, one of the few buildings outside Catalonia designed by Antoni Gaudí. The lively Barrio Húmedo, with its narrow streets and traditional tapas bars, adds a warm and welcoming atmosphere to this historic city.
