Burgos
Burgos is one of the most important stops along the Camino de Santiago and one of the most fascinating cities in Castile and León. Located along the banks of the Arlanzón River, the city has an elegant historic center that reflects its rich medieval past and its deep connection with the history of the Kingdom of Castile. For centuries, Burgos was an important political, commercial, and religious center, as well as a welcoming place for pilgrims traveling toward Santiago de Compostela.
The city’s most famous landmark is the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Mary, a masterpiece of Spanish Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its finely decorated spires dominate the city skyline, while the interior contains exceptional works of art and the tombs of El Cid and his wife, Jimena. Construction began in the 13th century, although the cathedral continued to be expanded and embellished over several centuries.
Other highlights include the impressive Arch of Santa María, once one of the main entrances through the city walls; the tree-lined Paseo del Espolón; and the Casa del Cordón, an important Renaissance building. With its monumental architecture, lively squares, and traditional cuisine, Burgos offers visitors a wonderful introduction to the culture and history of northern Spain.
