Asolo

Described by Giosuè Carducci as the “City of a Hundred Horizons,” Asolo is one of Italy’s most charming historical centers. Enclosed within the ancient walls that radiate from the 12th-century fortress, the Rocca, it preserves evidence of its thousand-year history in every corner.
A place of enchantment on the gentle Asolo hills, Asolo was a destination for poets and writers, artists and travelers who found inspiration and harmony here. Among them were the English poet Robert Browning, the theater diva Eleonora Duse, composer Gian Francesco Malipiero, and the English writer and traveler Freya Stark.
A visit to Asolo allows you to combine a love for history and culture with the pleasures of the table. In the taverns, restaurants, cafes, and wine bars that line the characteristic arcades and squares, you can savor excellent dishes made with the finest local products and rooted in Venetian culinary tradition, including delicious “cicchetti.” All of this can be accompanied by a sparkling glass of Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG, an excellence of our region.
Archaeological remains and artifacts, gathered in a dedicated section of the Civic Museum, document the presence of thermal baths, an aqueduct, a forum, and a theater, bearing witness to the importance of Asolo in Roman times.
Starting from the late 14th century under Venetian rule, the city entered a phase of great splendor. In 1489, Venice invested Caterina Cornaro, the former queen of Cyprus, with the Lordship of Asolo. She created a splendid Renaissance court of artists, writers, and poets, leaving an indelible mark on the city’s art and its very essence. Venice gave Asolo significant urban development and bound it to itself and its aristocracy indelibly until the fall of the Venetian Republic. It is said around here, “Asolo is Venice, and Venice is Asolo.”
